JK in China for six-day state visit

BY THE GUARDIAN REPORTER

22nd October 2014

Officials from the Chinese Embassy in Tanzania bid President Jakaya Kikwete farewell at JNIA in Dar es Salaam yesterday just before he jetted off for a six-day state visit to China.
President Jakaya Kikwete is in China for a six day state visit at the invitation of the country’s President Xi Jinping.

The visit, which began yesterday, is the second for him, and from China he is expected to visit Vietnam for three days.

In a press release issued yesterday in Dar es Salaam by the State House Directorate of Presidential Communications, it was explained that in China, the President will tour at least three provinces and hold talks with top Chinese government officials. Thereafter agreements on various development projects, to be funded by China, will be signed between officials of the two countries’ governments, according to the statement.

It said the President will also attend commemorations of the 50th anniversary of the Tanzania-China bilateral friendship and will also participate in special cerebrations to mark 50 years of the opening of the Chinese Embassy in Tanzania and Tanzania’s in China.

Among the top government officials that Kikwete expects to meet are his host, President Xi Jinping, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, and Speaker of the National Assembly of China, Zhang Dejiang, it said, adding: “The President will also meet with a few sponsors of development projects in Tanzania like the China-Africa Development Fund (CADB) and China Development Bank (CDB).”

According to the statement, Kikwete is expected to officiate the Third Business Investment Forum between Tanzania and China.

He will also launch the Africa village in China and meet with African Ambassadors and diplomats representing their countries in China, it said.

The China Agricultural University and the East China Normal University are expected to award Dr Kikwete a professorial status.

After Beijing, Dr Kikwete will visit Jinan province where he will witness Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) exhibitions that have been organized in his honour, it said adding that this is the first time that such an honour is bestowed on a non-Chinese leader within or outside China.

According to the statement, Kikwete will meet with the leaders of that province and Chinese doctors who worked in Tanzania in the past 50 years before he proceeds to Shenzhen province.

While there, the statement said, he will visit the headquarters of institutions and large Chinese companies at the Shenzhen Economic Zones Authority. They include China Merchants Holdings International (CMHI), Huawei and ZTE from where most Tanzanians buy their merchandise, it said.

The last time Kikwete visited China was in 2008, added the statement.
